Catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself is often a milestone for anglers. Our introduction to fly tying class will help you master fundamental tying techniques so you leave with the knowledge and experience required to tie basic fly patterns. Don't worry if you've never tied before, we'll thoroughly cover the basics in a step-by-step approach and have you tying flies in no time. This will set the stage for our more advanced classes.

  • All materials, vises, and tools will be provided for students to use. If you have your own vise and tools, feel free to bring them.

  • We've carefully chosen a set of trout-specific fly patterns that will help you understand a range of fundamental techniques that will easily transfer to other flies and styles.

  • You will learn the basic fly tying techniques necessary to tie nymphs, dry flies, and streamers.

  • You will learn about proportions so that the finished fly looks and acts appropriately on the water.

  • We will explore a variety of the materials that we stock in our fly shop, so that you become familiar with how they are used.

  • The class will include tips and tricks that will make the fly-tying process more enjoyable.

  • You will leave the class equipped with the fundamental skills needed to expand the craft.

Your instructor, John Parisi, a guide and the manager of our Bryn Mawr store, has been with TCO since 2015.  John has over 20 years of experience tying flies to catch trout in our local waters.
